NIST sets out priorities for trustworthy manufacturing digital twins
A workshop report highlights interoperability, model validation, cybersecurity and workforce readiness as priorities for adoption.

The report
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology published a summary of three workshops on digital twins for manufacturing. Participants from industry, academia and government examined adoption barriers and priorities for research and standards.
Trust in the model matters
The report identifies interoperability, verification and validation, uncertainty, cybersecurity and workforce readiness as persistent challenges. Its focus is on making digital twins dependable and scalable across manufacturing applications.
A practical consideration for manufacturers
Define the decision a digital twin should support before selecting a platform. Identify the required measurements, who maintains them and how the model will be checked against actual equipment. A narrowly scoped use case can make its value easier to evaluate.
